According to The Lima News, for Chad E. Metzger, his goal was to complete a marathon. However, unlike many athletes wanting to reach this goal, his path was a little more difficult since he has type 1 diabetes, which only amplified his desire to finish.
Metzger, 25, ran the Murray Ridge Marathon on Sunday in Elyria, completing the 26 miles in 4 hours, 51 minutes. “I knew I wasn't going to set a world record or anything. My main goal was just to finish.”
A diabetic not only has to be well conditioned and have endurance, but also needs to worry about blood-sugar level. This is because the body doesn't produce the insulin that regulates blood glucose concentration.

He said he noticed his pace slowing slightly around the 10th or 11th mile, and when he tested his blood sugar at the race's midpoint, he saw it was low, so he ate some bananas. “I know how my body reacts to different foods. I know how my body reacts to bananas,” he said. “They're a great source of energy, and they're loaded with potassium to help fight cramping.”
Metzger says he wants to run more marathons and improve his time and thinks he can get it under four hours. “No matter what disease or disability or anything you have, you can do anything you want to do,” Metzger said. “It may make things a challenge…It's like I tell my students. It’s all about attitude.”
