Are you a nervous driver or concerned that you may encounter one on the road? These are real situations that you must be prepared for. Whether you are young or old, you need to know what kind of protection fits your lifestyle. Therefore, in order to lead a safe life, you need a safeguard you can count on.
According to The Lima News, Georgia Cress was worried about her husband, Frederick. A doctor diagnosed him with Alzheimer's disease and recommended that Frederick not drive anymore, but he didn’t take the news well. However, it wasn’t until their son, Larry, made them talk and think about the potential consequences of Fredrick driving at length did the situation become real.
“Larry came in and calmly drew a line down a piece of paper. He listed the pros and cons for driving. When he was done, there were way more things on the con list. After that, my husband gave me the keys and never said anything about driving again.” Conversations like the Cress family had are becoming more prevalent as the American population ages. Advances in medicine and overall health have contributed to people aiming to stay behind the wheel longer than ever before. In addition, the technology has made cars easier for people to drive.

However, these advances have consequence: Drivers are outliving their physical ability to safely get behind the wheel. The issue of keeping older drivers safe on the road has taken on a new urgency, Elin Schold Davis, coordinator of the American Occupational Therapy Association's Older Driver Initiative, said. Three years ago, the AOTA along with AAA, started Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. The weeklong public awareness campaign is always held between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays because of the opportunities potential family gatherings have for honest conversations, she said.
Providing services to older drivers was one of the key reasons AAA joined the effort, said Kimberly Schwind, a spokeswoman for AAA Ohio Auto Club. “At AAA, we really advocate for the safety of all drivers. That starts with teens and goes all the way through to senior drivers. We really need to continue to advocate for the safety of these drivers, especially as our population continues to age.”
