If you are looking to make your life better than the year before, then there are many ways you can reenergize. Whether you take up exercising or pursue a hobby or spend more time with family, the list goes on and on. However, one item you should never forget about is protecting your loved ones now and in the future.

According to The Columbus Dispatch, after the holiday decorations come down, your home may seem boring, especially with the winter months still looming. Therefore, the following are tips from experts on how to brighten up your home and life:

Splash some paint
“Adding a pop of a fun, bright color can chase away not only the winter blues but the blues anytime,” said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin Williams. And don’t be afraid to combine similar hues. “Pairing colors within the same color family is a dominant trend,” she said.

Get organized
Starting the year with a clean, neat, and organized home can do wonders to eliminate the boring. “Clutter just weighs you down. It just stops the energy in your house,” said Birdie Brennan, owner of the Columbus organizing firm Solutions for Getting & Staying Organized. “If you minimize the clutter, that brings new energy to the house. Winter is a good time to do that, since you can’t get outside.”

Bring the green
When you can’t get to the garden, bring the garden to you. Debra Knapke, the Columbus “garden sage” who has written several books on Ohio gardening, suggests cutting a branch of witch hazel or forsythia, putting it in water and letting it bloom indoors for some freshness.

Change your art
Decorators suggest swapping out paintings that have hung on the walls for years. “The other thing to give a fresh look is to change the art,” Katie Hixon, owner of Katie Hixon Interiors in the New Albany area, said. “To not look at the same things year after year, that can make a difference.”

Lighten up
Every Ohioan knows winter days of gray can take their toll. While seasonal affective disorder isn’t a medically recognized diagnosis, its symptoms are found in more than 9% of Americans in some regions, said Joe Heimlich, an Ohio State University extension professor. The solution: get more light. If you can’t get outside during the day, open your blinds.
