According to The Lima News, property owners can help the environment and water systems by including storm drains in their fall cleanup chores.
The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is urging residents to keep storm drains and catch basins clear on or near their property. The drains move rain and melting snow away from roads to rivers and streams. The drains can't do their jobs properly is they're covered by leaves, Allen County Stormwater Coordinator Beth Seibert said.
“Nothing but storm water should enter a storm drain. Leaves seem harmless enough, but they can quickly block drainage. Once they reach the stream, they are an unnecessary added volume of waste that decomposes. The decomposition process dramatically lowers oxygen levels in a river, stressing fish and other aquatic life,” explains Seibert.

Most of the pollution in rivers and streams comes from storm water runoff, picking up oil, antifreeze, pet waste, litter, fertilizers, pesticides, and soil. Allen SWCD is helping mark storm drains to prevent their use in waste disposal and helping residents understand that storm drains need to be protected. Therefore, the storm drains or catch basins are marked in three ways locally:
• Catch basins installed in recent years come with a message pre-cast into the steel
• A message is stenciled on the grate or paved surface with paint
• A 4-inch stainless steel disc is bolted to the storm drain grate
